Why Religious Division? PDF Print E-mail

Paul reprimanded the Corinthian church for being divided, showing them it was not right. He said they should be “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). Religious leaders today will argue it can’t be done. Does God command us to do something that is impossible?

Why is there so much religious division in the world today? The answer is quite simple, really. False teachers are not content to abide in the teaching of Christ, therefore they do not have God (2 John 1:9). Sad as it is to say this, it is still the truth and it must be said.

Some of the Corinthian church were following Paul, some Apollos, some Cephas (or Peter) and some were following Christ. What a mess this must have been! So, Paul put this question before them: “Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?” (1 Corinthians 1:12-13). I believe the Corinthians could finally see how foolish their division really was.

Let me ask the “pastors” of denominational churches today this very same question: “Is Christ divided?” If every denominational church today is approved by, and supported by Christ, (as each “pastor” will maintain) how could Christ not be divided? Is this a fair question? Don’t all denominational churches claim to be following Christ and yet don’t they all teach different doctrines? Friends, is there any person reading these articles who cannot see the problem of religious division?

When someone opposes this division, that person is usually branded as a trouble maker. They are accused of not loving their fellowman. Let me ask you, did Paul love the Corinthians? Was Paul the one causing the trouble? The trouble is caused by the ones responsible for the division, not by those opposing the division. Am I wrong on this point?

The truth sometimes hurts, but the truth is what we all need because only the truth will save us (John 8:32). Paul said, “Have I therefore become your enemy by telling you the truth?”(Galatians 4:16).

Religious division exists today simply because men do not have a love for the truth and that is why God will send them “strong delusion” so they can believe a lie and be condemned (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12). Check it out. Friend, are you a truth seeker? Then talk to me!
